Few plants attract as much attention as our protagonist. It has large and beautiful flowers, so bright and cheerful in color that you want to buy it to decorate the patio or home. However ... there are two problems: it is very sensitive to excess water and cannot stand cold at all, so its cultivation is often complicated.

But it can stop being so if you follow the advice you'll find in this article. After several failed attempts, I have already discovered the trick to keep her alive and am going to share it with you. Discover how to care for a Desert Rose.

Origin and characteristics of the desert rose

Adenium obesum in habitat

It is an evergreen and succulent shrub that belongs to the Apocynaceae family. It is popularly known as the desert rose, sabi star or kudu, and can reach a height of up to 3 meters. It is native to eastern and southern Africa and Arabia.

It develops simple and whole leaves, leathery, with a size of 5-15 centimeters in length by 1-8 centimeters in width, of dark green color. During spring tubular flowers grow up to 6 centimeters in diameter, pink or red.

It has a fairly slow growth rate, about 2-5 centimeters per year. In addition, you should know that the sap of this plant is toxic, a characteristic that it shares with oleanders (Nerium).

How do you care for the desert rose?

To know what a plant needs, and more one like this, it is very important to see images of specimens that are growing in their natural habitat. In the case of the Desert Rose, known by the scientific name Adenium obesumWe know that it grows in very dry and very hot climates, on sandy soils in both Arabia and Africa. Only with this, we will know that We must have it in an area protected from the cold, water it very little and we must use a substrate that has excellent drainage.

The question is, how do you take care of yourself ?, because of course, in habitat it takes care of itself, but… and in cultivation? Cultivation is not easy, but not impossible.

The desert rose is a plant with caudex

To have one or more copies, take note of the following:

Location

It is a plant that it must be outside whenever possible, in a sunny area, or at least in which it is very bright. In winter it is better to place it in a greenhouse than inside the home, since it does not quite adapt to the conditions in the house.

Irrigation

Occasional. In the warm months twice a week, and the rest of the year once every 6 or 7 days, and only if the climate is very dry and the temperatures exceed 30ºC; otherwise, that is, if it is gentler and / or it rains more, the irrigation frequency will be less. In winter, water only once every 20 days or so, or when the trunk starts to get a little soft.

So that problems do not arise, you have to take into account the conditions of your area and climate, as well as the substrate and the location in which your desert rose is growing. Therefore, when in doubt, you should check the humidity of the substrate or soil.

And by the way, If you have it in a pot, it is not recommended that you put a plate under it, since when watering, the water would remain stagnant in the dish, and this would come into contact with the roots again, which do not tolerate puddling.

Substrate or soil

It must be very porous. I recommend you use akadama, pumice, river sand or the like. Even if you want to have it in the garden, it is advisable to make a large hole, and fill it with one of the aforementioned substrates.

Subscriber

During spring and summer it must be paid with mineral fertilizers, either with one for cacti and succulents sold in nurseries, or with a small spoonful of Nitrofoska or Osmocote every 15 days.

Transplant

  • Flower pot: it is important to change the pot in spring, every 2-3 years.
  • Garden: If you live in an area with a dry tropical climate and you want to have it in the garden, you can plant it in the ground after the driest season of the year.

When should the desert rose be pruned?

You can remove dried leaves and wilted flowers with your hands (but wear gloves) whenever necessary.

Multiplication

The desert rose multiplies by seeds in spring-summer. For this, they have to be sown in individual pots with coconut fiber mixed with perlite in equal parts.

Rusticity

It is very sensitive to cold. Temperatures below 0ºC can kill it, and below 10ºC it loses its leaves.

How to make a desert rose bloom?

The flower of Adenium obesum is large

In nurseries you can usually find already flowered plants, but after that time, it sometimes seems that they have a hard time producing flowers again. Why? Well, there can be several reasons, but based on my experience and those of other people I know, the most common are usually:

  • Bad choice of substrate: As we mentioned above, the desert rose grows in stony soils, where drainage is excellent. However, in nurseries they are sold in pots filled with peat and / or mulch, perhaps coconut fiber, which could be considered passable (neither good nor bad). In these substrates the roots have problems to root in conditions, and a plant that cannot emit new roots and continue the growth of the ones it already has is one that will flower very little or will not flower.
  • Excessive watering: The Adenium obesum needs little water; In fact, the ideal is to water only when the substrate has lost all its moisture. When it is watered more than it needs, its roots can rot, and therefore, it will not be able to produce new flowers.
  • Lack of compost: Although it is a plant that lives in areas where there is little decomposing matter, when grown in pots, that is, in containers where space and therefore the amount of substrate you can add is limited, there comes a time when the lack of nutrients begins to harm you. Therefore, to avoid reaching this situation, it is very interesting and advisable to pay it in spring and summer.

Good luck.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Indiana.

For it to flourish today in nurseries they sell specific fertilizers for flowering, for example this.

Fumigating it is not necessary, only if it has a plague. And in that case it would be necessary to see what type of pest it is, since the same products are not used to eliminate all insects.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria Eugenia.
As soon as it blooms, you can brush each of its flowers once a day.
      Thus they will produce seeds.
      A greeting.

Hi! I would like you to help me with my rose, it ran out of leaves and flowers but the branches continue to grow?

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hi Yesica.

          Thanks for your comment.

It is difficult for a plant like this to continue to have growing branches when it does not have leaves. Is it in shadow? It may be that it lacks light.

If you want, send us some photos of your desert rose to Contact@jardineriaon.com

          Regards!

    2.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria Eugenia.
You can do it as soon as it starts to bloom.
You pass a brush on each of its flowers once a day, and thus it will produce fruit with seeds.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Jorge.
I do not recommend it. It would worsen the drainage of the water, which would be fatal for the plant.

Good afternoon ... my question is how to take care of my desert rose seedlings in this cold weather. I have them in a small greenhouse for about three months.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Jorge.
During the winter you just have to keep them in the greenhouse with the substrate completely dry. Water them very little, once a month or every month and a half.
      A greeting.

Good evening, my desert rose is big and has lost many leaves, which seemed normal to me in the month of December. I went inside and it has a lot of light, but today I saw it with a branch a little "flattened", I looked at it and it felt soft. I did not like the texture ... What can I do? it's something bad??. Many thanks.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Polita.
Yes, when the desert rose softens, it is not a good sign.
In the event that you have not watered it for a long time (weeks) or if the soil is very very dry, then it is because it lacks water; otherwise it is probably due to cold.
Protect it from drafts (both cold and warm) and water it little. I also recommend treating it with a fungicide to prevent the appearance of fungi.
      A greeting.

Hello. My question refers to some white dots, like cotton that comes out on the leaves of my plant and then they dry up. What can be a disease? Excess water?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello, Martha.
If you can remove those dots, for example with a small brush, they are mealybugs. But if they are not fungi that have appeared by excess of water.
      A greeting.

I have some desert roses but the flower can not open only it reaches the button and turns black and the watering falls off every 20 days because it is still winter I have fertilized them and I just do not see them flower, thank you.

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hi Norma.
From what you count, it seems that the plant, taking advantage of the nutrients in the fertilizer, has flowered out of season, but when the flowers try to open they cannot because of the cold.

I recommend you not pay it more than in spring and summer. And wait 🙂

        A greeting.

Hello, they gave me a desert rose, I have it inside, it gives it a lot of light. In a very short time, the leaves started to stain, it has brown and black spots and the leaves fall off easily. It was in the sun for a few days, in my garden, but I think they are fungi, because of the type of stains. Or maybe, the pot is small…. I am cleaning the leaves with tea, to use natural products, but I do not know what to do ... thank you very much !!!!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello lili.
I recommend you stop cleaning the leaves. The desert rose is very sensitive to excess water and humidity.
If you are in summer now you can have it outside, protected from the sun; otherwise you will need frost protection.
Water very little, once a week or less. So little by little it will recover.
      All the best

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Lidia Isabel.
I recommend you leave them in that seedbed until they are about 3-4cm tall. Then, remove all the earth bread and carefully separate the seedlings. Do it in spring.
      A greeting.

Hi, I have my desert rose for 4 years or so. In summer I leave it in the sun and water it usually 2 times a week but I don't put as much water in it and in winter I have it indoors (I don't have a greenhouse). Since last year he has not given me flowers again and the stem is "thinning out". The leaves follow their natural course, they come out and are very green when they must and they fall in the winter, but they are getting smaller and smaller. Please, what can I do ???? Thanks a lot. Greetings

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ariana.
You may be running low on compost. I recommend you fertilize it with a liquid cactus fertilizer (it is not a cactus, but it has similar nutritional needs) following the instructions specified on the package.

      Hello Linda Jasmine.
You can remove them from the pots and put them in a dry place protected from direct sun for a couple of days.
Then, plant them in the pots and water with homemade rooting agents.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Eglis.
How often do you water it? You have to water it once or twice a week at most. If you see the substrate dry, I recommend you water it.
If you have a plate underneath, remove the excess water ten minutes after watering.

      Hi Sorelys.

we are in the middle of winter and I have it inside the house with light and sun
Please, what should I do to not lose her?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Mirtha.
It is normal for it to get a bit ugly in winter if the temperature is cold (it can't stand the cold, if it drops below 15ºC it starts to have a bad time).
The oldest ones are normal for them to fall, so don't worry. 🙂

Water it very little, once every 10-15 days, and keep it protected from the wind.

    What is happening to them?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Isaias.
Do you have a plate under them? If so, I recommend removing it because stagnant water rots the roots.

If not, have you recently had them? If so, put them in semi-shade, since although they are sunny plants, if they come from a nursery, and if they are young, they have a hard time being directly exposed to the sun's rays.

      Greetings.

can you have it inside the home? And what do I do with the wasps that want to harm it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Nataly.

From my own experience I do not recommend having it inside the house, since it is a plant that wants a lot of (natural) light, and that in a home is difficult to have it. Now, if there are frosts in your area, then you should have it inside the house, but keeping the substrate dry for most of the time.

As for wasps, in this article We explain how to cheat.

Hi, I just ordered one but I still don't know where to put it. Can I keep it indoors during the winter with little light and then take it out when the weather warms up a bit in spring? My only outside would be on a balcony in Galicia, with frost, I think it would be a murder to take it out of it in winter.

If it can withstand the winter well without sun even if it gives it trouble to flower, I'd better keep it and I won't risk it.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Alejandro.
Without a doubt, it would be better inside than outside, but... the fact that it has little light is going to be a problem. I recommend that if during the winter there are days when the temperature exceeds 10 degrees, take advantage of it and take it out for a while.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Rafael.

You mean you have trouble getting seeds? If so, you have to pass a brush over one flower and immediately afterwards through the other, and then go over the first one again. Like this once every day.

Oleander and Adenium are genetically similar. In fact, their flowers are very similar. They belong to the same family, Apocynaceae.
