Are the colored coves indoor or outdoor?

The colored callas can be inside and outside the house

The colored callas are as or more beautiful than the one with white flowers, which is why it is not uncommon to wonder if they should be brought indoors or left outside, since it is important that they live as long as possible.

It seems that they are very delicate, and therefore, it can give the impression that they can't stand the cold at all. Thus, I am going to tell you if the colored coves are indoors or outdoors.

When do we say that a plant is indoor?

I always like to start at the beginning, so before we dive into the subject of this article, I want you to know what a houseplant really is. And good, This is a plant that, because it can't stand the cold -or to be more exact, sub-zero temperatures- must be grown indoors at least during the winter. This is the case of anthuriums, philodendrons, and monsteras, for example, if we focus on those that are cultivated as such in many parts of Spain.

And it is that, yes, depending on the climate in an area (country or province), there may be one or the other plants that have to be kept indoors. Thus, while in Madrid one has at ficus retusa indoors, in the Mediterranean region you can be outside all year round.

Are the coves indoor colors?

To answer this question well, another one would have to be asked: what is the resistance to cold of these plants? These are varieties of the species Zantedeschia ethiopica (The white cove), which is native to South Africa. Y This is a rhizomatous herb that withstands the cold very well, but suffers from frost.. That is why its leaves die if they are exposed to frost, for example, or to those northerly winds that are so, so cold.

So, if we focus on our protagonists, we can intuit that if the pure species can't stand the frost, they won't be able to either. In fact, I would dare to say that they are more sensitive to cold, so I do not recommend having them outside the house in autumn if at that time the temperatures begin to drop below 10ºC.

In what conditions should they be kept inside the house?

In other words: where should we put the colored calla lilies at home? And how to take care of them? Okay, Well, what we will do is put them in a room where there are windows. This is crucial so that they can have the light they need. In addition, in this room there must not be drafts; that is, we do not have to have -or at least, we should not start- the air conditioning, fan, etc., since if we do, the leaves will be damaged.

Another important point has to do with the pot. This It must be a container - it does not matter if it is made of plastic or clay - that has at least one drainage hole. If it did not have it, the roots would die as a result of excess water. For this reason, it is also necessary that you empty the plate that you are going to put under it after watering. And speaking of irrigation, you should pour water -to the earth- several times a week during the summer, but less the rest of the year.

Can they be outside?

Colorful calla lilies are semi-aquatic plants

Of course they do, but if the temperatures drop below ten degrees, you already know that you will have to protect them either at home or in a greenhouse. Regardless of where you put them, it is important that they do not lack light; in fact, if you have them outside, I recommend that you place them in semi-shade.

If, on the contrary, you are going to choose to have them at home, you should put them in a place where there is clarity since they would not be pretty if you choose to have them in one where you can hardly see anything.

Under what conditions should it be kept outside the home?

If they are going to be kept abroad, I recommend that you place them in an area where they get direct sunlight for just a while. Another option would be to put them in semi-shade, in a place where the sun would never hit them directly. You can leave them in a pot, or if you have a garden, plant them in the ground.

As for irrigation, you will have to be aware of the humidity of the earth, since being outside, it is normal for it to dry much faster than if it were indoors. Therefore, you may need to water them about 4 times a week in the summer, and less in the winter.

Remember that if there are frosts in your area, you will have to protect your colored coves so that you do not run the risk of losing them.

I hope that now you are clear where you are going to have them.
