Robust Washingtonia

View of a young Washingtonia robusta

It abounds in gardens, avenues, and streets in areas that enjoy warm or temperate climates. The Robust Washingtonia It is a magnificent palm tree, very resistant, that will give us great satisfaction.

Its growth is fast, it is also said that can grow at the rate of one meter per year, which guarantees that in a very short time we will be able to have a magnificent specimen in our garden, we just have to be patient.

Origin of the Robust Washingtonia

Generally a little is known about the Robust Washingtonia, but its origin is still unknown. Therefore, we will tell you some basic aspects and what you have to know since the information of its origin or place of origin can help you with your intentions to have this species in your home.

But before we start, we must clarifyr and above all highlight that this has two variations. The first one is known as Mexican Washingtonia as already said above. The other variation is known under the name of the Californian fan palm.

And although they are different variations of the same species, both belong to California, northwestern Mexico, much of Florida, Nevada, Arizona and multiple arid areas and those that have soils rich in salts. Since this plant is known to have great resistance to high levels of salinity in the soil.

As a curiosity, this plant is named after one of the greatest presidents of the United States, George Washington and although the plant is seen in much of this country, its place of origin is from Mexico, specifically the Baja and Sonora regions.

The simple fact that this specimen is seen in other areas far from its place of origin, is due to its great resistance to arid climates and the ease it has to grow and spread.

Features

The Washingtonia robusta is a palm with a slender trunk

Image - Wikimedia / Spikebrennan

Its growth is fast, it is said that it can grow at the rate of one meter per year, which guarantees that in a very short time we will be able to have a magnificent specimen in our garden. Although the growth will also depend on the environmental conditions and / or the care given to the plant.

If you decide to have this plant in your house, indoor or outdoor garden or any other area, you have to know that this particular species can grow up to 30 meters tall. But if you give it the necessary care, you can keep it alive for a long time without having to grow so tall.

La Robust Washingtonia It has quite large fan-shaped leaves, about 50cm wide by 60-70cm long without counting the petiole that supports them. They are green in color and with some white threads or hairs that come out of each tip of the leaflet.

It should be noted that the leaves of this plant are perennial. and its growth like the plant itself is quite fast. The petiole is rigid, green, the edges of which have thorns. I know in charge of holding the leaves. When it dies, the petiole dries up and remains attached to the trunk.

In his youth, the trunk is mainly composed of petioles that are drying out. As the palm tree grows taller, it begins to form the smooth, grayish-brown trunk that we are so used to seeing. As for the diameter of the trunk, it is usually about 40 cm at most.

During its first years of life, the trunk of this plant basically acquires a straight shape. But as its growth increases until it reaches approximately 30 meters in height, the weight and gravity do their thing and the plant tends to lean or take a curved shape.

Maintaining the Robust Washingtonia It is minimal. It is a palm suitable for xerogardening due to its resistance to drought, and weak frosts down to -5º. However, during the first year of age, and especially if we have it in a pot, it will need periodic watering and fertilization to develop a strong root system.

In previous paragraphs it was commented that this plant was spreads easily thanks to its seeds. Well, as incredible as it may seem to some, this plant produces flowers. Otherwise, it would have no seeds to spread.

As for your flowers, these are grouped in axillary inflorescences. It is easy to distinguish them since it tendsn to be hanging and branching from the center of the plant as such.

The fruit or the seed that these plants generate have a sphere shape and are black in color. If you take a ruler to measure its fruits or seeds, you will notice that its diameter is less than 0.6 cm.

Care

To know how to give the necessary care to the plant, you have to know that his life and integrity will depend a lot on 4 fundamental factors, which are:

Plant location

How could you have imagined this plant for obvious reasons needs the sun to grow and live. Some tend to plant them in places with partial shade. But it is best to keep it in places where the sun hits them directly.

What is essential is that once the plant has germinated and has begun to grow, you have to plant it in a clear area and where the sun hits it directly once the plant has reached a height of 30 cm. It is advisable to plant it directly in the ground instead of in pots.

Irrigation

The Washingtonia robusta is a palm tree

Obviously there will be a time when you will have this plant in a pot while it is growing. While it isé in this place, you have to to water, specifically two to three times a week during the summer and 5 to 6 times the rest of the year. Once the plant has reached its first year on the floor, you no longer need to water it.

The subscription

This is not as necessary as the previous two factors. Nevertheless, you can do it when spring is about to start Until the summer ends It is best to use organic waste to give the plant nutrients.

Choosing the best planting season

Basically can be planted at any time of the year, but the most advisable thing is to do it in spring times since the freezing weather and continuous watering has become the least of the requirements.

Farming

To cultivate the Robust Washingtonia you will only need to take into account the 4 factors that were mentioned a moment ago and the seeds of the plant to begin their germination, since this species is propagated, cultivated and grows thanks to its seeds.

The good news is that you don't have to wait too long to see the germination of this plant. The time is relatively short and only about a month is enough to see a small outbreak.

But if you want the chances of growth to be favorable, we suggest you plant the seeds during the spring. By the way, the compost from herbivorous animals is very good.

The good thing is that you do not have to give it special treatment or be constantly doing maintenance since it does not require it. All you have to do is grab a small plastic container and prepare some wet compost.

Put the seeds in and keep it in a warm place. If conditions permit, it will not be necessary to wait 4 weeks for the plant to germinate. And then what you have to do is take the soil together with the plant that has germinated from its container and put it in a larger pot if you want to do it like that.

Multiplication

As could well be observed throughout this article, the plant is relatively easy to plant and / or grow. And everything is thanks to its great capacity and multiplication. Just stand under this plant and look at the ground, you will notice the large amount of seeds scattered all over the ground.

Birds along with other animals that feed on its seeds, make the plant can spread much more easily. And if you want, you can take the seeds yourself and make the plant multiply faster than naturally.

Plagues and diseases

Generally, the plant is incredibly resistant to pests, diseases and environmental conditions. However, those plants that are in full development and have not reached their adult stage tend to be more vulnerable to fusarium, as it causes wilting.

On the other hand, while the plant is very young, it is prone to dealing with pests such as:

The red weevil

The red palm weevil affects palm trees

This is a weevil that is very similar to beetles. The larvae of these animals tend to enter the galleries of the plant, which causes its central leaf to be affected. Although it is also common to see holes in the trunk which indicates that the animal is inside.

Hi Monica, I would like to know how to clean your trunk and what time would be more appropriate.

    Thank you,

    A greeting.

    Jose C.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello José C.
To clean the trunk of the Washingtonia, the dry bases of the leaves are removed one by one, simply pulling down, starting from the base of the trunk. You can also help yourself with a small saw or a cuttex. Avoid going too deep as palm tree wounds are permanent.
The most suitable time is either early spring or autumn, as this way we also ensure that the risk that the red palm weevil or paysandisia may harm the palm is minimal, practically nil.
      A greeting.

with what and how do I fertilize the palm

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi John.
You can fertilize it with specific fertilizer for palm trees or with natural fertilizers such as guano, in both cases following the instructions specified on the package.

    2.    Cristina said

I need to know what the roots of the robust Washington look like, if they are deep or if they tend to break some construction or raise floors. Mine is 5 years old. Its trunk has a diameter of 80cm and the leaves 1.m wide. And I think it broke everything down. If so, I'll have to get it out.

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hello Cristina.

Palm tree roots are adventitious, that is, they all sprout from the same point (the lowest part of the trunk), and they are all more or less the same length.
They do not have the strength to break an asphalt ground for example, but if it is a sandy ground or with loose pavement, they could. Therefore, you have to leave space for it to grow, and not put asphalt a few centimeters from the trunk, for example, but at least about 40 centimeters from it.

        Greetings.

Hi there! I recently planted a palm of these, but the next day hundreds of hairs began to grow
    It is normal?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Lemmuel.
Washingtonia have quite a few "hairs", especially W. filifera.
If the palm tree looks good, in principle it could be normal. Anyway, if you want to upload a photo to tinypic or some page of these and put the link to see it.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica! I recently bought a Washingtonia that I have in a pot, but it has four logs. Are there species that can have several trunks or do I actually have four? Thanks a lot

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Borja.
Washingtonia are palm trees with a single trunk, so you have 4 specimens in a single pot 🙂.
      A greeting.

  5.   Sebastián said

Hello Monica. They gave me a seed of Washingtonia. I'm going to put it in a pot. How deep should I put the seed? How much should I water it? How long will it take to germinate? From already thank you very much.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Sebastian.
For it to germinate, you just have to fill a pot with universal substrate for plants, deposit the seed on its surface and cover it with a thin layer of substrate.
Then give it a generous watering, put it in full sun, and it will germinate in about a month. If the seed is fresh, you can do it even in 7 days.
You have to keep the substrate moist but not flooded, so I recommend you water the pot 3 times a week, maximum 4.
      Greetings 🙂.

      1.    Sebastián said

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and your time, Monica! Sincerely.

So that it is fresh, I mean, I have to soak it in water

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Jairo.
Sorry, but I don't understand your question 🙁. You mean how to keep the palm tree cool? If so, it is not necessary. It supports well the temperatures of 40ºC. You only have to water it two or three times a week in summer, and one or two / week the rest of the year.
If you mean seeds, by "fresh" you mean fresh from the plant. They are seeds that germinate right away.
          A greeting.

Washingtonia grow very fast, so in 5-7 years you can have very beautiful specimens.
      A greeting.

How many meters will your trunk be in that time

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Valentin.
A 7-year-old Washingtonia can measure her good 6-7 meters. Fertilize it once a month and it will grow very, very fast 🙂

I have 6 washingtonia palm trees ... and my problem is that these grew very beautiful ... but I want to remove 3 ... at the same time I do not want to remove them for danger to the neighbors ... but it is very difficult for me to prune them since I do not have a vehicle ... the municipality charges me for removing them ... with a small fee ...

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Roberto.
How tall are they? It occurs to me that perhaps you could cut them into pieces with patience, up on a ladder.
Another option would be to put herbicide on them, but the risk of the other palm trees dying, if they are together, is very high.
      A greeting.

  10.   Gisela said

The tips of my Washingtonia are a bit dry. Is it normal because of the autumn weather? How often I water it, is 2lts of water okay? How often to remove the soil? I have it in a pot.
    Thank you!!!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Gisela.
Yes it's normal. You must water it until the soil is well soaked, adding at least 4l of water.
As for the land, it is not stirred 🙂. You just have to move it to a larger pot once a year, and add substrate (black peat).
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria.
It is normal that for a few days it is a little bad, especially if they had it in an area where it was protected from direct sun and now it is in the sun all day.
I recommend you water it regularly, 3 times a week. And so far nothing else. You'll see how it recovers. They are very strong palm trees 😉.
Anyway, if you want to upload an image to tinypic or imageshack and copy the link here.

    Good night!
I have bought 12 Whasintonias robusts of 1 meter of troco in Elche and I have planted them in Madrid in June.
The farmer brought them to me tied by the leaves and told me not to untie them in time.
They are drying up and the neighbors ask me if they are dying.
I bought another 6 of three meters of trunk without a pot, uprooted with the root ball in the air.

What do I do with the tied leaves? I water frequently?
I have planted them in a one cubic meter pot with gravel underneath and mixing sand and earth, on top of decorative macaela stone.
    When will they be green?

    Thank you very much

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi samuel.
Leave the dry leaves, since they protect the new ones from the sun, and until the new ones begin to stand out it is better not to untie them.
Regarding irrigation. Now in summer you have to water a lot: about 3 times a week. It is also highly recommended to water from time to time with rooting agents, whether chemical or natural (lentils).
In principle, they shouldn't take more than a month to grow.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi samuel.
Unfortunately, all Washingtonia catch weevil. What happens is that first it will go for the Canary Islands palms, then if there are no date palms, and then it will go for the Chamaerops and the Washingtonia, preferring the robust ones. But that's it, if there aren't any of his favorites, he'll go for others. And it is only a matter of time before it affects other genres.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello jhon.
The Washingtonia withstand the drought well, but not so much the excess water.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi, Pablo.
In principle no special care 🙂. At 50cm is a good distance to dig. If a case, water it once a week or 15 days with a powdered rooting agent - sold in nurseries-.

Hi Monica, I have a Washintonia palm tree that is about 7 meters long and older leaves dry faster than I think it should be. The new ones go well. What could it be due to? By having it on grass could it be due to excess risk? Thank you very much greetings

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Feli.
Yes, the grass wants a lot more water than the palm tree. To avoid going overboard, I would recommend removing some grass around the Washingtonia, and trying to keep the water from reaching it.
Anyway, if you want, upload a photo to Imageshack or Tinypic, and copy the link here to see it better.

Seeing her in a photo, it doesn't look like she's so bad 🙂. But also, being planted in the grass, it is highly recommended to avoid that a lot of water reaches it, since the trunk could rot.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Rachel.
Palm tree roots are not dangerous. They can go as deep as 60-70cm, and extend perhaps 1 or 2m, but they have no strength to destroy pipes or floors. 🙂

  20.   Maira said

Hello Monica. I have a robust Washintonian and I see that it has grown young. Can I separate them and transplant them into other pots? How do you advise me to do this task?

    Thank you,

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Maira.
I'll tell you: Washingtonias are single-stemmed palms that do not produce suckers. What may have happened is that seeds from your own palm tree, or from others, have ended up very close to the trunk.
To remove them, you simply have to dig a little - about 20cm - around with a small hoe, or with your hand if the earth is soft, and extract it carefully. Afterwards, it is planted in a pot with universal cultivation substrate.
      A greeting.

    Hello Goodnight.
I want to plant about 200 washingtonia palms to market. What separation should it have between one palm and another? and what other advice can you give me?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Francisco.
The distance between palm trees must be 3m if you want to sell them later. The more the better since this way it will be easier to remove them.
Tips, just two: sun and subscriber. Both are important for them to grow fast and well. You can fertilize them with a specific fertilizer for palm trees that you will find for sale in nurseries, or with organic fertilizers such as guano, which is of rapid efficacy.
      Luck.

Hello, my washingtona looks like this after transplanting it from the ground into a pot: http://imageshack.com/a/img921/430/NEx55J.jpg I watered it 2 times during these 3/4 days since I brought it to my house. I put fertilizer in it and added banana powder and eggshell. At first it was like this: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img923/662/VClNUP.jpg All that time she was without a roof to cover her from the sun. When I got it out of there, I had to cut some roots that were clinging to the wall behind. I hope I didn't hurt him too much.
And then potted like this: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/1434/8dq6Ac.jpg It was covered in the sun, with cloudy days so far. I repeat, it has only been 3/4 days since I brought it in a pot.
Do I leave it in the sun, exposed to the rains? Is something wrong with my palm tree or is it just adjusting? What do you suggest I do? I wait for an answer. From already thank you very much. Very good page and info.
    Regards,

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Daniel.
      Thanks for your words 🙂
It is normal for her to appear listless at first.
My advice is to keep it protected from direct sun (the rains won't hurt) until it starts to grow again.
You can water it with a homemade rooting agent made from lentils until it improves. This will help it to cast new roots. In this article explains how to do it.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Susan.
Washingtonias are single-trunk palm trees. There is a similar species that is the Chamaerops humilis, which has a great tendency to take offspring.
When growth stops, it can be due to cold, lack of compost or some pest. Have you seen if the leaves have any holes or if there are any insects?
If you can, upload a photo to tinypic or imageshack, copy the link here and I'll tell you.

Regarding your question. There will be no compatibility issues, don't worry. Six meters is fine. The roots of palm trees should occupy a maximum of 0,50cm-1m, and the root system of citrus is not invasive.

Good afternoon Monica, I have two robusta washingtonia palm trees in which my doubt is because I had approximately the two palm trees in a place where direct sunlight did not reach them, however I relocated them and now they are outdoors with the sun all During the day, however, I have noticed several purple spots on the petiole, I would like to know why this change is due, and my second question is: I have a biofertilizer but I do not know what is the ideal way to apply it to palm trees since According to the proportions of the container, the amount that must be added is very little, I would appreciate your answer, thank you.

    Atte. Francisco

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Francisco.
The stains you mention are surely sunburns. But do not worry, they will get used to it without problems.
Regarding the biofertilizer, what is it? I'm asking you because there are some that are ready for use, but there are others that must be diluted in water before application.
      A greeting.

      1.    Francis Lozano said

This is a biofertilizer based on plant extracts, which if it has to be diluted in water, nothing more than the container says that 2 liters of the product must be diluted in a proportion to irrigate one hectare, however when converting the amount proportional is 0.002 liters, so I would like to know if this proportion is correct or will you know of an article where I can see what proportions have been managed or if there have been problems with it, and taking advantage of your kindness I would like to know if you will know about Somewhere where I specify which is the best method to prune washingtonia palm trees, I will tell you because I once read that these palm trees as their fan grows, the petioles that are drying have to be put aside so that they new fans can come out more easily, is this correct? What happens is that of these two palm trees that I am telling you, about 2 months ago I brought them from another place but they have not grown at all and I would like to know a little more about this process.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Francisco.
If they are 2l of biofertilizer per hectare, yes, that is correct. 0,002l for each meter.
With regard to the pruning of palm trees, there are those who are removing the dry leaves and there are those who leave them. It is not necessary, since the palm tree alone will produce leaves that will come out without problems.
If you start to pay them, you'll see how they grow 🙂

Good afternoon Monica, as I told you last week, I am working with two Washingtonia Robusta palm trees and I mentioned that I was observing a problem of spots, which you told me that could be caused by the sun and that applying fertilizer could be healthier, However, today I observed them again, however, apart from the stain that appeared, one of the fans began to dry, I share the images http://i67.tinypic.com/281fxhh.jpgLikewise, I tell you that I applied the amount of 3ml of bio-fertilizer in a container of 1lt of water, I would appreciate your help.

            Hello Francisco.
As it takes a short time, it is normal for it to lose some leaves.
The trunk looks good, and the stems are green.

Anyway, if you can, take a photo that shows the whole plant. But in principle I would tell you that it just takes more time to adjust. Wasghintonias are very strong and resistant palm trees.

            A greeting.

Hello good, I have a Palm tree in a pot inside the house, I know it is of the Washingtonia genre, but my question is. If it is (Filifera or Robusta) it will currently measure about 15 or 20 cm high. It has the color of the trunk between very purple and reddish or something similar to red it has 4 somewhat elongated leaves one of them coming out new and nothing I would like to know which washingtonia I have hehe and get rid of doubts at once! Many thanks!!! beforehand

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ivan.
So small it is difficult to tell 🙂 Anyway, if it is filiferous when it begins to remove divided leaves you will see that it has many white filaments. The robust has them too, but not in an exaggerated way.

I have a wsshingtonia palm and I do not water or fertilize it but it is growing too much, how can I avoid that or how to prune it so that it does not grow too much? I am worried I appreciate your answer.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Estelita.
The Washingtonia is a palm tree that grows very fast under the right conditions. To control its growth a bit, I would recommend making four deep trenches, about 50cm or more, around the trunk and putting anti-rhizome mesh on it. In this way, the roots will not be able to spread very much and their development will be somewhat slower.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica. I have planted two filifera in two 60 cm pots. The peculiarity is that I have buried these containers in the garden to prevent the roots from spreading and suffocating other nearby plants as it happened with other palm trees that I had before and they died from the weevil. After a year the filifera are perfect but I am worried about the future. I don't know if they won't grow from being in pots or will die from being overwhelmed. The pots are made of plastic. Thanks I love this page.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Beatriz.
We are glad that you like the blog.
Regarding your doubt, the pots are large, but over time (several years from now) it may happen that some roots come out through the drainage holes.

Hello Monica. I have a palm tree planted with its pot in my garden, it is small, less than a meter, with four very large leaves and a new leaf has grown, we have had it for a week, at first it opened very well and looked very Pretty, over time it fell a lot and we tied the leaves a little so that it would stay high and the leaves began to squeak, we removed the atillo and now the fans are closed, why is that?
    Thanks and best regards

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ada.
Before putting it on the ground, was it exposed to direct sun? If not, it is most likely "burning". If so, my advice is to put shading mesh on it until fall arrives, so it can recover. Next year it won't be necessary to protect it.
If it is not this, please write to us and again and we will tell you.

Do these flowers come out every year?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Santiago.
Yes, palm trees are plants that, once they bloom once, they do it again every year.

    Hi how are things…
… I have a Washingtonia palm and I removed the petioles (which is attached to the trunk); Well, the trunk has a light brown color, my question is: what can I put on the trunk so that it does not lose that color over time, thanks Monica

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Juan José.
Well, the truth is that I can't think of anything 🙁. Over time that color becomes darker, naturally.
Perhaps protecting it from direct sun can delay the process, for example wrapping it with shading mesh.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello again Juan José.
In principle I would say no, but just in case I would recommend treating it with chlorpyrifos, to prevent potentially dangerous pests for palm trees, such as the red weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).

Here in Lima- Peru I have known a fan palm for 40 years, it does not reach 3.50 meters, and it does not have thorns on the petiole, it seems to me of the genus Brahea, the dry ripe seeds are dark and oval. It is unique and I want to spread it to save it. Am I more or less oriented? If so, what do you recommend I do? Thanks

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Abel.
It might be a Trinax, which are palms that grow rather little and have no thorns.
Its seeds can be taken, peeled, and sown in pots. To make them germinate better and faster, you can first place them in a glass of water for 24 hours.

Hello, they just gave me a palm tree, I think it is robust whashingtonia, the point is that it is a bare root. I am going to plant it in a beach area, but I am only going in mid-August. I would like to know if I should keep it in water or with some substrate while not transplanting it. Thank you. I would also like to know if it gets along with eucalyptus and maritime pines. How far away should I plant it from them? Greetings, very interesting page.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Gabriela.
Better plant it in a pot with growing medium for plants (such as mulch or black peat).
Eucalyptus and pine trees do not get along well with plants 🙁 For the palm tree to grow well, it must be at a minimum distance of 10m.

IT IS TRULY OF MY APPRECIATION AND I DO NOT WANT HIM TO DIE

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ricardo.
You can treat it with nematodes. It is an ecological remedy that will not affect your health or that of the animals, and that will help the palm tree. Nematodes are microscopic worms that will kill a wide variety of palm tree pests, including chisa.
You can find them in garden stores, and nurseries, also in online stores, where they sell bags of several million. The one that will serve you is the bag of 25 million.

The mode of use is as follows:
1.- Thoroughly clean the shower or container, to remove well any remaining insecticide that may be there.
2.- Pour the contents of the bag into 25 liters of water, and stir well.
      3.- Finally, water.

To prevent other pests from affecting it, I recommend you also spray the eye of the palm tree if you can.

      A greeting.

      Hello Silvia.
Yes, the Washingtonia grows a lot, 20 meters.
If you are looking for small sun palm trees, I recommend these:
      -Chamaerops humilis
      -Trithrinax
      -Nannorhops

      A greeting.

Good morning, I just got a Washingtonia as a gift and I would like to know if it can be put in a pot, because I don't have a place to plant it, if it is not possible to have it in a pot it is most likely that I will have to give it away. Thanks in advance for your attention.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Chris.
I'm not sorry. The Washingtonia is a palm tree that sooner or later is going to need to be on the ground. Although the roots of these plants are superficial (they do not go deeper than 60cm), there are species, such as the Washingtonia, that do not grow well in containers, either because they tend to take out suckers (such as the date palm) or because their trunk is thicker than a pot can feed.

If you want to have a potted palm tree, I recommend these:
      -Phoenix roebellinii (semi-shadow)
-Chamaedorea (all varieties, in semi-shade also)
      -Trachycarpus (Sun)
-Chamaerops humilis, the palmetto (large pot, in full sun)
      -Nannorhops (same as palm heart)

      A greeting.

Hello, I have a baby washingtonia, I have it in a pot, it is approximately 4 centimeters, I have it in full sun, I would like some advice to keep it well and not die, (I forgot to tell you that this palm tree was coming out next to a tree of the street and since we are in winter, take advantage of transplanting it to this pot) I put leaf soil and water it once a week. Greetings!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ingrid.
The Washingtonia is a very adaptable palm tree; probably one of the most.
Keep watering it once or twice a week, increasing the frequency of watering in the warm months, and change the pot every year.
If you can, when it is about 30cm, I recommend you plant it in the ground, since it is a plant that, although it can live well for many years in a pot, in the end it will end up wanting to be in the ground.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica. I have two Washington. . A transplanted from a spontaneous outbreak that allied us and is two years old. The other is bought and is already two meters tall. But the same thing happens to both of them, leaves are growing on them. But these have a very very short petiole, and the leaf remains attached to the trunk. I also think that the leaves dry very quickly. What can I do or what could be the cause? I try not to water them too much (They have been without water for three weeks) Thank you very much Monica! !!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Jordi.
From what you count, it seems that they lack water and compost.
They need to be watered more often: at least three times a week in summer and every 5-7 days the rest of the year.
During spring and summer, it is highly recommended to fertilize them with a fertilizer for palm trees (such as that of Massó Garden), following the instructions specified on the packaging.
Thus, little by little they will take out leaves with petioles of an adequate length.
      A greeting.

      Hello Daniel.
Washingtonia seeds germinate best in pots or plastic bags with airtight seal with soil at a temperature of about 20ºC.
For them to germinate faster, it is recommended to have them in a glass of water for 24 before sowing them, but it is not, let's say, necessary for them to sprout 🙂

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Edgar.
No, it is not possible. Palm trees only have a single growth guide; without it, they die.
What you can do is water it the least, and not fertilize it. This can slow its growth a bit.

Palm tree roots cannot break through walls.
However, for the W. robusta to grow well, they should be planted at least 60cm from the buildings.

Waiting for your reply. Interesting your blog. Thank you.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hey.
I recommend you stop watering it so often, because excess watering will cause the roots to rot.

Hello, let me tell you, I live on the island of Chiloe in southern Chile, a place with very low temperatures during autumn and winter, a lot of rain almost all year round and strong winds between winter and spring.
I really want to have palm trees, at the moment I like washintognia because of its rapid growth according to what I have read.

Based on your experience, do you think I'm lucky with the climate here?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Eduardo.

The Washingtonians resist cold and frost, but they are native to almost desert areas, where the climate is hot and dry.

For your climate, I recommend more Trachycarpus, or the palm tree that you have typical of Chile: Jubaea chilensis. The latter is true that it is somewhat slow, but very beautiful.

      Hi Jonathan.

It cannot be prevented from blooming, since that is something that is inscribed in the genes of the plant.

What you can do is cut the flowers as soon as they appear. Thus there will be no seeds.

Hello Monica. Two months ago I bought a Washingtonia. When I bought it, its leaves were well standing and green. I put it in an indirect sunny place and its leaves started to get sad. So far two have dried completely and the other three are still fine but low, like a trunk skirt. I stopped putting water in it 3 days ago because I read that if it is a fungus it is bad to overwater them. Likewise, I put it in direct sun. It scares me that you might die. What I can do?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Moses.

Was that palm tree in shade when you went to buy it? From what you say, so that it is burning by the sun, something that only happens when it is grown in the shade and then it is spent in the sun without being used to it.

Don't worry: Washingtonia is a very strong palm tree and can bounce back. For that, I recommend you put it in a place with a lot of light but without giving it directly, and reduce the waterings to two a week. Leave it there for a while, until you see that it begins to remove leaves with some speed and healthy; then you can expose it to the direct sun for a while (one or two hours) each day, avoiding the central hours of the day and increasing the exposure time by 1-2 hours each week.

      Regards!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Alfredo.

If you want them to grow together, you can plant them about 50 centimeters from each other. This way you would get their trunks to grow quite straight.
