The unique beauty of bromeliads

Bromeliad

I love the bromeliads. They are extraordinary plants that give that much sought-after tropical touch to have either indoors., or in the garden if we can enjoy a warm climate.

They are very grateful plants, which with very little are spectacularly beautiful. Do you want to know them?

Bromeliads are native to tropical and subtropical rainforests around the world, especially America. They are epiphytic plants, that is, they grow on the trunks and branches of trees, where a little organic material is deposited that helps them to hold on. They are not parasitic, which means that their roots do not absorb the sap from the host trunk.

They can also grow in soil without any problem. In fact, in gardens they are used to delimit paths or areas along with other low-growing plants. They look great! If you don't believe me, take a look at this photo:

Pretty, right? Since they need high humidity, they are perfect to have on the lawn or around it. Its most suitable location is one where it is protected from direct light, especially if you live in a climate like the Mediterranean where the sun is very intense. But you can also have it indoors, for example, at the entrance of the home, or in the bathroom if it receives good natural light and where it will also have the humidity it needs.

If you want to have it in a pot, I recommend use a clay one as this way its roots can be held more firmly. The most suitable substrate is the following: pine bark (you can use the substrate for orchids) and 50% black peat. As you can see, they are plants whose maintenance is low. When it's about to bloom you will see how suckers begin to grow and the leaves of the mother plant begin to dry. This is normal. Bromeliads are plants that, after flowering, die and leave their offspring, which you can separate and plant in individual pots.
