growing the rose bush indoors

The main thing is the location. We must find a place in the house that is very bright. For instance, we can place it near the windows to give it the maximum amount of light possible. This is because the mini rose bush is originally an outdoor plant. It is important to place it near the window since the lack of light so that it has a more reduced flowering. Some of the symptoms of lack of light are paler colors in flower petals and even abortion of already existing flower buds.

As for watering, it should be moderate by making the excess water stay in a plate. Excess water can cause root rot, so we must control the amounts. The fertilizer must be periodic to help the plant grow properly. It is recommended once a week and use a balanced fertilizer rich in potash. If we use fertilizers rich in nitrogen, there is a fairly rapid growth with many leaves but with hardly any flowering.

For transplanting to a larger pot, you must use a peaty and fertilized substrate. It is advisable to use some type of substrate that has been similar to that used with outdoor plants.

    Hello Monica!

I'm Mireia, we contacted a long time ago to talk about my olive bonsai (which by the way is more beautiful)! In Sant Jordi they gave me a pitimini rose bush with a flower and three buds. I read about the subject and saw that they had to be transplanted separately, because if there is not always one who "eats" the others, what would be called "the dominant one". I used Compos's soil (commercial) and put gravel for drainage in the bottom of the pot. I have bought a NPK 6-6-6 fertilizer, and I have another of a different proportion.

They are also drying up ... I don't know what to do ...

    Regards!

      Hi Mireia.
I'm glad the bonsai is going well 🙂
Transplanting a rose bush that is in bloom is a bit delicate. The flowers tend to abort immediately, and the plant becomes sad. To do? In these cases I recommend watering with homemade rooting hormones (lentils) to emit new roots.
Once you do, you will have the strength to pull out new leaves.
For now, do not fertilize, because the roots cannot absorb so much "food" when they are sick.
      A greeting.

    Hola!

I have been given a mini rosebush for Sant Jordi and it is the first plant that I have in my care. I would like to transplant it because it comes in a plastic pot with very little soil, but I have several doubts:

1- Is it good to transplant it now? I mean it has several flowers that haven't come out yet but they are working on it and I don't want to "stress" the plant too soon, but at the same time I feel that where it is it doesn't have enough soil to continue growing as it is barely standing , and I understand that it is because the plant itself weighs more than the land it has.

2- Although they are NOT the same, can I mix the substrate you already have with the substrate you buy? Or do I have to remove as much of the substrate as I can before moving it into the new pot with the other substrate? I thought that the “compo Sana universal substrate” would be good.

3- The stones that I have to put down when transplanting, do they have to be inside the pot under the substrate or in a tray under the pot?

4- What type of pot would be the most suitable?

5- The only indoor place I have to put it is on a piece of furniture from where it only receives a few minutes (at most an hour) of “direct” sun per day, but I am afraid to take it outside and it will die. I live in Barcelona, so in summer the temperatures can be extremely suffocating and my balcony is lit up for many hours. Is it better to leave her in, or out?

    Thank you very much!

      Hi Gemma.

      Do I answer you:

1.- Yes, you can do it now without any problem. Considering that spring has really begun now, it will not be a big problem for him to recover from the transplant.

2.- Yes, you can mix them, although I don't recommend Compo very much because when it dries completely, it later has a hard time absorbing the needle again and it's a pain. If you can, better buy the Flower one.

3.- You don't need to put stones, but if you want to improve drainage, they have to be small (about 5mm maximum). Put them inside the pot, as a first layer before filling it with soil.

4.- It can be made of plastic, but if it is made of clay, the roots will "grab" better and the plant will grow more easily. But go, as long as it has holes in its base, any one will do fine.

5.- Always outside, except if there are significant frosts. Rose bushes are plants that withstand the Mediterranean sun well. I am in Mallorca and I have a mini rosebush in the window (outside) all year round and it holds up well.

      Regards!
