How to decorate the facades of houses

facade

The facades of the houses should be a sample of the character of the homes. They are the first thing you see, and therefore the first thing that will give us an impression about the homes. Although we think that the walls must be free of plants, this is not always the case. In fact, we can enjoy a green home.

Those plants that we put will make the temperature inside the house much more pleasant in summer, which if the weather is especially hot is to be appreciated. Here we explain how can you decorate the facade of your home.

Cover the wall with climbing plants

Climbing plants are perfect for decorating walls, but not just any kind. So that they can develop well it is important that the wall is made of brick, stone or with a single layer coating, since their tendrils must be able to hold well and, in addition, during the warmer months of the year they do not have to overheat.

There are many species with which we can have a green facade, such as the following:

  • Virgin vine (Parthenocissus tricuspidata): deciduous, turning reddish in autumn. It grows both in the sun and in partial shade, on all types of soils. It does not need support. Resists up to -15ºC.
  • Honeysuckle (lonicera japonica): deciduous, although you can keep them if the winter is mild. It grows best in semi-shade, protected from direct sun, on all types of soils. Needs support to climb. Resists up to -5ºC.
  • Clematis (Clematis sp): Evergreen. It grows both in the sun and in partial shade, on fertile soils. Needs support to climb. Resists up to -4ºC.

Create hedges along the walls

Normally, we are very used to seeing hedges inside the garden, dividing it in different areas or giving it privacy. But, Why not create them near the walls too? They look very good, especially if they are low, like the ones in the house in the upper image.

Decorate your terrace with succulents

Cactus and succulent garden

If you live in a hot, dry climate, succulents (cacti and succulents) are the best option. With them, you can have a beautiful rockery on your terrace without problems, since its root system is not invasive. Of course, it is convenient that the tallest plants are at the back so that the shorter ones can also receive the amount of light they need.

Vertical garden for a unique home
