Dendrobium, an easy maintenance orchid

The orchid Dendrobium it is, along with Phalaenopsis, one of the most popular. The beauty of its flowers and its easy maintenance make it a much loved plant for all those who start in the cultivation of this type of plant beings.

What is the Dendrobium orchid like?

Our protagonist is an epiphytic orchid (that is, it lives on the branches of trees) or lithophyte (grows on rocks) native to Southeast Asia, specifically in Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. It is characterized by developing a large pseudobulb from which a stem similar to a cane that measures more than 30cm emerges.. Leaves emerge from it, which are short, oval and alternate.

The flowers arise from an axillary bud that, when the petals wither, this one also dries. These flowers can be small or, on the contrary, showy and large, depending on the variety. The flowering season can be from a few weeks to six months.

How do you take care of yourself?

Would you like to get one? Give it these cares and enjoy it for a long time:

• Location: indoors, in a very bright room. You need protection from direct sun.
• Substratum: use substrate for orchids, or failing that, black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts.
• Irrigation: every 3 or 4 days during the warm months, and every week the rest of the year. Use rainwater or lime-free.
• Subscriber: in spring and summer, with fertilizers for orchids that they sell already prepared in the nurseries. Follow the directions specified on the package.
• Transplant: every 3 or 4 years, to a tall, narrow pot.
• Rusticity: it is very sensitive to cold. It can only be grown outside if you live in a frost-free climate.
