In North America there is one of the greater conifers that inhabit planet Earth: the Giant sequoia, whose scientific name is Sequoiadendron giganteum.
It can reach such a high height, and a trunk thickness so wide, that in some places a kind of bridge has been made so that people could pass.
Sequoia is very slow growing, but also very safe. It does not usually have pest or disease problems. It has a life expectancy of three thousand years, longer than any animal or other plant.
Its origin is in northern California, in North America, at an altitude of between 1500 and 2500m above sea level, whose climatic conditions are ideal for the survival of this magnificent plant. Winters are cold, with heavy snowfalls, and the rest of the year the climate remains mild.
It has an approximate height of 100 meters, and a trunk thickness which requires a few 20 people to hug him.
In the first years of life, if the climatic conditions accompany it, its growth is rapid. As it gains height, the growth rate slows.
The Sequoia is planted as isolated specimen, due to its large size. It needs a lot of space to be able to develop properly.
It is very resistant to low temperatures, but not to the dryness of the environment or excessive heat (a temperature higher than 30º can harm it).
The land where we can place the giant Sequoia must be acidic, in a cool place.
It reproduces by seeds, which must be stratified naturally outside, or artificially in the refrigerator, at a temperature of 5º, for three months.
