Origin and characteristics

The goatee, also known as poinciana, caesalpinia, or carob, and whose scientific name is Caesalpinia gilliesii, is an endemic shrub to Argentina. It grows to a height of 2 meters and develops pubescent and glandular branches. The leaves are evergreen or deciduous depending on the climate, bipinnate, from 6 to 28cm, green in color. The flowers, which sprout in summer, are grouped in terminal clusters, and the fruit is a linear legume measuring about 5-10 x 1,5-2cm.

It has a fairly fast growth rate and also resists drought reasonably well, making it a very interesting plant to have in gardens or in pots.

How do you take care of yourself?

If you want to get a copy, we recommend providing the following care:

• Location: it must be in full sun.
• Irrigation: twice a week in summer and a little less the rest of the year.
• Earth:
  • Pot: not demanding, it can be in universal growing substrate (for sale here).
  • Garden: it is indifferent, but it will grow somewhat better on land that has good drainage.
• Subscriber: from spring to late summer with organic fertilizers such as guano (you can get it here). It will be enough to put a little around the trunk once a month or every two months.
• Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
• Pruning: after flowering, but only if necessary.
• Multiplication: by seeds in spring. Direct sowing in the seedbed after having sandpapered them a few times.
• Rusticity: supports up to -10ºC if they are not very constant.
