Our protagonist is a herbaceous perennial sufruticosa native to Eurasia and North Africa whose scientific name is Marrubium vulgaris. Today it is also found in South Australia and Tasmania. It is popularly known as horehound, toad grass or cuyano lemon balm. Its base is somewhat woody and reaches a height of between 15 and 80 centimeters. The leaves are rough on the upper side and with the veins marked on the underside, and measure 2-7 by 1-4cm.

The flowers are grouped in inflorescences arranged in dense globular whorls. The fruits are dry, ovoid-ellipsoid, measure 1,5 to 2mm, and are dark brown-blackish in color.
