How to germinate a fig seed

Fig open

Figs are delicious fruits that ripen towards the end of summer or early autumn depending on the varieties. They come from a deciduous tree whose scientific name is Ficus carica, which is not only beautiful and practical but is also very good to take care of since it resists drought without problems once a year has passed since it was planted. on the floor.

For all these reasons, if you want to know how to germinate a fig seed, thus avoiding having to buy a copy, I will explain it to you below.

When is it sown?

The fig seed has a very, very short viability period, of just a few months (what is necessary to survive a warm-temperate winter and germinate in spring). If we take this into account, the ideal is to sow it soon, as soon as we have acquired the fruit. This, if it has been taken directly from the tree, better since it will be much cooler than if we buy it in the supermarket.

But how is? Small, creamy brown in color, and quite hard to the touch. You can see - paying some attention, yes 🙂 - relatively well as soon as you open the fig.

How does it germinate?

Now that we know when to sow, what we will do is go for a fig from the garden, which is a little soft (that is, if you press gently it should sink a bit) to open it and extract the seeds for example with tweezers, since being small like this it will be much easier for us.

Then We fill a pot with universal cultivation substrate and water conscientiously, and then spread the seeds on the surface, ensuring that they are about 2 centimeters apart.

Lastly, we cover them with a thin layer of sand and place them outside, in semi-shadow. Keeping the substrate moist they will germinate during the spring 😉.

Good planting!
