Have you already chosen the climber that is going to decorate that special area of the garden? Then it is time to plant it in its final location. To carry out this procedure it is very important that you take into account factors such as the climate and the size of the plant itself, so that it can grow properly, flourish and aromatize and decorate the places we need.

Most climbing plants are purchased from a nursery or garden center, at any time of the year. They are usually found in a pot or with a root ball of soil in a plastic bag. In this way, it will be very easy to transport it, and then plant it with relative ease. Let's see how to plant a vine.

When to plant a vine?

The creeper is planted in spring

Before you prepare to plant your vine, you should know when the best time is. It must be borne in mind that if it is planted in one that is not the most suitable, excessive cold or, on the contrary, excessive heat can cause considerable damage. If this happens, it will cost you more to overcome the transplant, and it could even be the case that you do not.

Therefore, the best time to put it in its final location is in spring, a little before or a little after it resumes its growth, something that it will do more or less at the beginning of the season (end of March / beginning of April in the northern hemisphere). If the climate is warm or mild, with no frosts or very weak (down to -2ºC), you also have the option of proceeding with planting towards the beginning / mid-autumn (September / October in the northern hemisphere).

How to plant it step by step?

Now that we know when to plant it, let's see what things we will need and what are the steps to follow:

Materials

  • Azada
  • Gardening gloves
  • Tutors
  • Ropes, flanges or wires
  • Water

Step by step

It is the following:

Make a hole

To plant the vine It is advisable to dig a hole more or less than twice the diameter and depth of the pot in which your plant comes. In addition, if you plant it near a wall or a wall, it is important that you try to make the hole about 40 centimeters away from it, that although the climber will go up the wall, it must have this distance from the place where it is going to climb up.

Keep in mind that the larger the hole, the more loose soil the roots will find and therefore the faster they can grow.

Fill it with water

As soon as you finish digging add plenty of water, until it is completely filled. This will be useful for several things:

  • Know if the soil drainage is good or bad: if it is good, you will see that the water is absorbed quickly; On the contrary, if it is bad, you will see that it takes hours to be absorbed.
  • Keep the plant hydrated from the first moment: as soon as you finish planting it, the roots will begin to absorb the water they will find in the soil, thus preventing them from drying out.
  • Make better use of the water: if you fill the hole with water as soon as you finish, you save yourself having to water again to finish the planting. And that is not to mention that, although the cost of water may be greater this way, it is more controlled and will be better used by the plant.

Fill the hole with quality soil

For climbers, the land must be fertile

If the garden soil has good drainage and it is fertile, you can use that same one; Otherwise, we recommend adding a first layer of about 10 centimeters of small stones, gravel or similar, and then filling more or less half with universal growing substrate, or with one for acid plants if the climber in question is acidophilic. as the wisteria, mixed with perlite in equal parts.

Remove the climber from the pot or bag

Do it carefully. Place the plant at an angle on the ground, and remove it from the pot or bag, taking care not to manipulate the roots too much. If you see that it is necessary, tap the container or remove the bag by cutting it with scissors.

Stick it in the hole

Once it is out of the pot or bag, you should place it in the center of the hole. If you see that it is too high or too low, remove or add dirt, well Ideally, the surface of the soil pan / root ball should be about 5 centimeters below ground level, since this way when it is watered it will be avoided to make use of the water in vain.

Finish filling

As soon as I'm ready you have to finish filling the hole with the soil or substrate that you used before. You can help yourself with the hoe to make the work more comfortable and shorter.

Tutor your vine

In the same way, it is important to place a tutor on the plant, since it cannot grab itself and climb on its own. It is we who we must go fixing it with ropes, bridles or wires, on a support as the climber grows.

Keep in mind that when planting vines, they should be separated about 2 or 3 meters from other vines. However, if you want them to cover a wall or a fence in your garden, you can plant them closer together, although you should know that they will become entangled with each other and in the long run the effect may not be what you were looking for.
