Pruning shears

Hibiscus, being plants originating in warm climates, they must be pruned in spring or autumn if the weather is mild and there is no frost. Now, the flower stems and, of course, their flowers, have to be removed as they wither so that they continue to look beautiful and above all healthy.

For that, you will need pruning shears like the ones you can see in the image above, a small, well-sharpened saw for branches that are thicker than 0,5cm, and pharmacy alcohol to disinfect tools before and after use.

How are Hibiscus pruned?

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

Hibiscus pruning has a single purpose, and it is to get new branches in order to give it a compact or small tree shape as you prefer. For the first case, you have to cut all the branches 0,6cm from the top of a leaf; while in the second the trunks have to be left clean. Make sure you don't cut more than 2/3 of any branch, as your plants could end up badly damaged.

To get lower branches, they have to be clamped; this is, cut the ends of the ones on top. Then you have to cut out those that look weak, sick or make them look bad.

In this way, you will have one or more Hibiscus plants that will produce a large number of flowers.
