How to transplant indoor palm trees

kentia

The palm trees that we have inside the home from time to time need to change their pot and renew the substrate, since their roots have absorbed all the nutrients that were in the peat, and therefore the plant can not grow more not having more space either.

This time I am going to explain to you how to transplant indoor palm trees, so that they can continue to look as beautiful as they have been before.

Things we are going to need

Flower pot

Before performing any task, it is very important to first prepare what we are going to use. In this case, it will be:

  • Flower pot: this will have to be at least 5cm wider and deeper than the previous one. If it is a fast growing species or with a tendency to take out basal suckers, Dypsis lutescens or Chamaedorea elegans, it is highly recommended that they be about 10 or 15cm wider and deeper.
  • Substratum: a mixture of substrates that is easy to obtain and that is not going to give us problems is perlite with black peat. However, there are other alternatives, such as mixing equal parts garden soil, mulch and sand. It is also highly recommended to place a first layer of volcanic clay in the pot to further improve drainage.
  • Watering can: very important, after each transplant, give a good watering.

Step by step

Compost

In order not to stain the ground, it is highly advisable to transplant on the balcony or terrace, but if we do not have these rooms, you can carry out this task by placing the palm tree and its new pot in a large plastic tray. When you are going to change the pot, you have to fill the pot with substrate, extract the palm tree and plant it in its new pot.

Although you have to be careful with the roots, the truth is that they are very resistant plants, and if any roots break, it will not be a big problem. Yes indeed, It is necessary to ensure that the root ball does not crumble, since otherwise it will cost more to overcome the transplant. To help it, add a few drops of Benerva (sold in pharmacies); this way the wounds will heal faster and the palm tree will be able to resume your growth in the shortest possible time.
