Origin and characteristics of Hoya Kerri

The Hoya kerri is a succulent plant

La Hoya kerrii is a medium-fast growing vine plant that can reach up to 4 meters in height. It is native to Southeast Asia, specifically southern China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and the island of Java (Indonesia). It has fleshy, heart-shaped leaves, which is why the heart plant is called. These sprout from very thin stems, barely 7 millimeters in diameter, and 6 centimeters wide.

The flowers are grouped in inflorescences, of up to 25 units, and are red-brownish in color. They produce small amounts of nectar, and may have a certain aroma.

It is popularly known as wax flower, heart cactus (although it has nothing to do with cacti), heart succulent or fleshy hoya.

What are the care of the hoya carnosa?

If you want to have a specimen of this beautiful plant, we recommend providing it with the following care so that it lasts for a long time:

Location

  • Interior: it has to be placed in a bright room, otherwise it will not grow well. It is also important to keep it away from both hot and cold air currents. That is why we must avoid putting it in passageways, since the air current that we generate when passing could end up damaging its leaves.
  • Body exterior:: put in a bright area, but protected from direct sun. For example, if you have a shady balcony, that might be fine there.

Irrigation

Irrigation must be rather scarce. It is a very sensitive plant to excess water, being able to rot quickly. To avoid it, the substrate or soil must be allowed to dry completely before watering again. In addition, you must moisten the soil or substrate, never the plant.

Also keep in mind that if you are going to have it in a pot, it must have holes in its base through which the water can escape. If you have a plate underneath, do not forget to remove the liquid that has been left over after watering. In this way, it will be more difficult for its roots to rot.

Earth

The flowers of the Hoya kerri are small

  • Flower pot: fill with universal substrate (for sale here) mixed with perlite in equal parts. If you live in an area where it rains frequently, it is better that you use pumice, kiryuzuna, or similar substrates.
  • Garden: As it is a very slow growing plant, it is not usually recommended to have it in the garden, but if you are interested in having it there, the soil must be very porous so that the drainage is fast.

Subscriber

From early spring to late summer It must be paid with a specific fertilizer for cacti and other succulents such as this, following the indications specified on the product packaging.

Multiplication

Given its slow growth, Hoya Kerri multiplies by cuttings in spring. To do this, what is done is to cut a leaf, and plant it in a pot with a porous substrate type pumice or kiryuzuna.

Then it is placed in a bright area but without direct sun, and the suture is kept moist (not flooded). If you want to make sure that it will root, you can water it the first month with homemade rooting hormones.

If all goes well, in about 15-20 days it will begin to develop its own roots, but it is important that you know that it is normal for several years (minimum 2) to pass without you noticing any change.

Plagues and diseases

It is quite resistant in general, but it is necessary to have be very careful with the snails, because these animals are great eaters of fleshy leaves. Therefore, it does not hurt to protect the heart plant by sprinkling diatomaceous earth around it, or putting some shellfish repellent.

Rusticity

She is very pretty, but also very sensitive to cold, since temperatures below 7ºC can seriously damage it.

the gray spots on the leaf seen in the image, what is their cause?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi leo.
You mean the plant in the last image?
It could be that it had been sprayed with calcareous water, but in principle it is not serious. Another thing would be if it was done very often, then the blade would have problems.
      A greeting.

Hi! I have a Hoya Kerrii and it is growing very fast, in a year it is more than 1 m ... tall, it has some granules on the stem as if it were going to grow roots and I was thinking of pruning it since it is very straight and I want it to be more Like a bush, what do you recommend so that more branches grow

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Beloved.
You can prune it in late winter or early spring with scissors previously disinfected with pharmacy alcohol, trimming the branches as much as you need. It won't take long to bring out lower stems.
      A greeting.

Hello, I have a Hoya Kerrii like the one in the photo, a single heart-shaped leaf. It is in a slightly larger pot than the one I bought it in and has not grown at all since that day, over three years ago! Its appearance is perfect, a luminous dark green, it is not dry but it does not grow or new leaves come out, is this normal?
    Thank you very much,
    Gilda.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Gilda.
Yes it's normal. Sometimes they take a long time 🙂
I recommend you fertilize it with a fertilizer for cacti and succulents, following the instructions specified on the package.
      A greeting.

My plant is huge and beautiful but not scripted to make flowers, what does it need to flourish?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Adelaide.
If you have not paid it, it is important to do it from the beginning of spring to the end of summer with a fertilizer for cacti and other succulents, following the instructions specified on the product packaging.
Otherwise, it may need some light (not direct sun) if it is in the shade.
      A greeting.

        Greetings and good luck.

Hello First, thanks for all your advice, they are great and very understandable
My Hoya Kerrii, is new, only two leaves, but there have been little black dots on the back, and in front of one leaf, a slight white shadow was made. The tapeworm on the ground, change it to a substrate or coconut shell base.
    What I do??
    THANKS!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Rachel.

How often do you water it? It is a plant that must be watered when the soil or substrate is completely dry, as it does not resist waterlogging.

If you have a plate under it, I recommend taking it off.

      Greetings.

Good morning, I live in Colombia when I saw the leaf in a nursery, I bought three, one for myself and the other to give as a gift.
I have bought them for 4 months and two have little leaves that seem bad but are very attached to the leaf and are very weak. The other leaf shows no sign of a sucker. I have it in a place where it gives it light but not direct.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Eugenia.

You can fertilize them with a little compost for succulents (cacti and succulents), to stimulate their growth.

      Greetings.
