Cactus II Graft Multiplication

As we saw previously, there are different methods of multiplication of succulent plants and cacti such as the seed method and cuttings method.

Another of the most used methods is the cactus graft.

Yesterday, we mentioned some of the characteristics of grafting and why we use it as a way to multiply our succulent plants and cacti.

Today we will talk about other factors that we need to take into account when multiplying by grafts, the graft carriers.

¿Which plants are rootstock? The most suitable species to serve as rootstocks in plants such as cacti are:

  • Hylocereus: these plants are the most used to serve as rootstock, because they grow very quickly and can endure very humid soils. However, they have the disadvantage that a few years after having been multiplied the plant and the graft can die, generally they do not last more than 5 years. If you want to try to keep this plant and the graft it is important that you re-graft it at least every 2 or 3 years so that it stays alive.
  • Echinopsis pachanoi: although they are not one of the most used graft carriers, they are one of the most durable. If you use this plant as a graft holder, you will have a plant for much longer without the need to re-graft it.
  • Trichocereus pachanoi: it is a type of columnar cactus quite suitable for this type of species that must withstand low temperatures, very cold climates and dry soils during the winter season.
  • Echinopsis multiplex: these types of plants are characterized by being quite easy to grow and by the large number of suckers they produce.

Trichocereus pachanoi is my understanding to be a synonym for Echinopsis pachanoi.
