Potted beans

Growing broad bean plant

It is the moment of the lima beans. Before the frosts come, we have to have them germinated. So, planting. As indicated, our october crop calendar, It is between September and November the most suitable time, but depending on the geographical area, it can be extended a little more, as long as there is no ice cream. Once germinated, it withstands the cold very well.

The bean is typical fall cropThey are very productive and do not require special care. Uniquely, like peas, it requires a minimum pot size about 30 cm in diameter and 25 in depth. In spring, it will surprise us with its multiple pods full of rich broad beans, which provide our body with minerals such as magnesium, iron and calcium, and vitamins B and C.

The broad bean is a legume native to the Middle East that very soon spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. It is one of the main foods during spring in all agricultural cultures. In Spain it is a rooted crop since prehistoric times.

Broad bean varieties are classified by the length of their cycle and the size of the plant. To cultivate in the urban garden Short cycle and slower growing varieties are recommended.

Before sowing, the seeds need to be soaked for a day so that once sown their germination is easier. The seeds will be sown directly in a 50 x 50 cm planting frame. Germination will occur 10 days after sowing. The seeds need a temperature below 20 degrees to germinate.

Its roots are deep, so we will need pots with a certain height, at least 25 cm, better if they are larger.

Regarding irrigation, It needs continuous but short waterings, it is important to have the soil wet, but without excesses

Their pests The most important are the black aphid and thrips. And the diseases that affect them the most, mildew and brotitis.

La harvest It will be done 3-4 months after sowing and it is not necessary to leave them in the pods for a long time, as they harden and lose flavor.

Their crop associations favorable are lettuce, celery and potatoes. And, on the contrary, it is harmed by other legumes (beans, peas ...), onions, leeks and garlic.

I just discovered this website and I find it very interesting. I live in Andalusia and I have just started my garden on the terrace with pots and a cultivation table. The first shoots have already appeared (chard, lettuce, spinach, endives, onions); surprisingly, despite the high temperatures we still have in October, the first bean shoots came out yesterday, five days after planting the seeds.

Hello Ana. I would like to know if the bean plant reaches a lot of height and if it is necessary to place a tutor.
    Thank you for your wisdom.

Hello Rocio! Oh, little wisdom, the more I learn, the less I know.
No, it is not necessary to place a tutor, as long as you acquire a variety of lower growth and short cycle, which is ideal for growing in pots. The only thing is that when it reaches 15 cm. It is advisable to cover the base of the stem with soil, to promote the growth of the roots and strengthen the plant.
Thanks to you for following the blog.
