The star cactus, or Astrophytum ornatum, is a cactus that reaches a height of 50 centimeters. It loves the sun, although it can adapt well to living in semi-shady areas as long as it is very bright. During the spring it produces flowers of about 2-3cm of yellow color, and it will be just at that moment when we will have to start pollinating it.. How do you do that? Very simple: we pass the brush over one flower, then another, and then we go back to the first one.
To obtain more resistant specimens, it is highly advisable (although not mandatory) to pass the brush through the flowers of a cactus, then the other, and return to the first. In this way, the genetic variety will be greater, and therefore, there will be a better chance that they will grow strong and healthy.
Cross pollination it should be done once or twice every day until the petals fall off. After the flowers fall, the fruit will begin to ripen. We do not have to start it until we can move it with a gentle touch, for which we will have to wait about a month. After that time, We will open it and, putting the seeds in a strainer, we will clean them well with water to immediately sow them later.
