As we have seen in previous posts, the graft It is one of the most used forms for multiplication of succulent plants and cacti.
It is for this reason that today we have brought you the steps we must follow to perform a cactus graft.
- Step 1: one week before grafting, it is important that we prepare the plants so that the transplant is not so traumatic. We can use, for the preparation of our living being a little more fertilizer and irrigation. What we want to achieve with this additional contribution is that the plant swells so that it is easier to carry out the graft.
- Step 2: We have already seen that the plant that is the recipient is called the graft holder. This must be from the same season, that is, we cannot use an old plant as a graft holder since the fleshy part would dry out and the skeleton would remain protruding and it would end up expelling the graft that we just made. It is important that the plant that we use as a recipient is at least 2 years old.
- Step 3: It is important that we use a knife, or a scalpel, or any other short sharp material to make the cuts. Make sure that these items are previously sterilized and that they are very sharp. To sterilize it instead of putting it in the microwave we must leave it in bleach diluted in water for 24 hours.
- Step 4: We must make a horizontal cut in the receiving plant.
- Step 5: If you are one of those who does not want the rootstock to show, you should cut only 4 centimeters above the ground.
- Step 6: It is important that you make sure that, when joining both plants they are very well united. We must press a little so that the contact is correct and to prevent air from entering and giving some kind of impurity to the new plant.
- Step 7: Use elastics to hold both parts together and prevent them from coming loose.
It is important that we be patient, more or less after 15 days we will begin to see that the graft welded perfectly and we will be able to remove the elastics.
