La Palmera living room: at a glance

Chamaedorea elegans

La Chamaedorea elegans, better known as Living room palm tree, It is a palm tree that is widely used both in interior, as to decorate patios or even some corner of the garden. Let's learn more about this plant.

First of all you have to know that in the same pot, there are usually about twenty specimens. Why? Because a leafy pot is easier to sell than a single seedling of a few centimeters. But actually, this plant is unicaule, that is to say, of a single trunk. Its origin is in Central America, where it lives under the shade of trees.

It can reach a height of two or three meters, but in a pot it does not exceed two. Can be potted all his lifeas it does not have an "aggressive" root system. It has a very thin ringed trunk, about three centimeters thick at most; and some compound, pinnate, dark green leaves.

Its inflorescence (that is to say, set of flowers) is composed of female flowers which have a yellowish color, or of male flowers. It's a plant dioecious (i.e. there are male feet and female feet).

The seeds are very small, oval, less than a centimeter long.

It does not resist frost. But it will hold up well to three or four degrees below zero if they last a short time, and if it is somewhat sheltered.

Indoors it is advisable to have it in a place with a lot of light, without direct sun since it can burn. It will be watered when the land feels dry.

The Hall Palm is not a plant to which you have to transplant often. When we acquire it we can put it in a pot about two square centimeters wider, and it is likely that it will last a long time.

It is advisable to pay it with a specific fertilizer for palm treesFrom March to October, we can even pay in November if we live in a warm climate (without frost).

Hello, I have a small one in the bathroom of my house, it is bright but does not shine directly in the sun, and the leaves are turning brown at the tips! Has a process of adaptation to the place or should change it directly this 3 weeks ago

      Hello Rachel.
The hall palm always grows in semi-shaded areas, without direct light. But when there is not much light, the tips of the leaves can turn brown, and discolored spots (such as whitish) may appear on the top of the leaves.
It can also happen if you are drafty, or if the environment is dry. For this reason, I recommend that you put bowls or glasses with water around the pot (you can take advantage of and put small aquatic plants, such as duckweed). I do not advise you to spray it, since the water would clog the pores of the leaves, preventing them from breathing well.
      A greeting.
