Pine bark

La Pine bark It is a natural material that we can use to improve the health of our plants, but also the appearance of our garden, as you will be able to see in this article.

And, as if that were not enough, it will be one of your best allies that will help you save water. Find out why.

Pine bark benefits

Pine bark in the garden

This is a relatively inexpensive material (a 50l bag can cost around 7 euros) that has multiple benefits. It is used more and more because it is very practical, and the truth is that it looks good in any type of garden, even in those with a more modern style. But, Why is it so interesting?

Avoid herbs

Wherever there is pine bark, you will hardly see a grass grow. You can strain some seed, of course, but it is very, very rare. And anyway, if it germinated, you would see it right away and could easily remove it.

Help save water

Being on the ground, prevents water from evaporating so quickly. Thus, every time you water the plants, you make sure that they will have practically all the liquid that you gave them.

Protect plants from cold

It is one of the most used materials to mulch plants in autumn-winter. Pine bark absorb heat, so the root system will not feel the cold.

Can be stepped on

Unlike other materials, this one you can step on no problem.

Gives color and gives off a good aroma

If you want to have a garden with beautiful contrasts and also smell good, pine bark is for you.

Pine bark uses

Phalaenopsis

Now that we know what makes this stuff amazing, let's see what it's used for:

  • Padded: protect your plants from the cold.
  • Decoration: By having a dark color, it enhances the beauty of your garden.
  • Substrate for orchids: It is the most suitable for your epiphytic orchids, such as Phalaenopsis, to grow and develop.
  • Aerate and fertilize the soil: For this, you have to use washed pine bark, without substrate. Mix it with the soil or substrate and the roots of your plants can be properly aerated. In addition, it will also serve as compost.

Hello, I would like to know one thing.
I have collected pine bark to make substrate for my Monsteras but I don't know if I have to wash it and give it some treatment before in case it has bugs or something. Thank you

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hello Alejandro.
Pine bark is too acidic for monsteras. I recommend you use better peat or mulch.
        A greeting.

Monica how are you. I like your blogspot. What gets under the pine bark ... A layer of sand? Or is put directly on the ground

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Mercedes.
      Thanks for your words.
Regarding your question, it can be put directly on the ground.
      A greeting.

    Hello Mercedes
Can you put pine bark, as drainage, in a pot instead of stones or sand?
I had to transplant a lemon tree and, since I didn't have stones for the bottom of the pot, I put in a lot of pine bark. Is it bad for the plant? I did it yesterday, can I leave it like this, or better I transplant it again by putting stones?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Nuria.
Better to put stones. Pine bark can overly acidify the substrate.
      A greeting.

    Monica good morning, regarding:
Aerate and fertilize the soil: for this, you have to use washed pine bark

What is the process of washing the crust, did I read elsewhere that the crust should be boiled for 30 minutes and then let it drain?

    Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ricardo.
Yes effectively. It's done like this 🙂
Or if not, what you can also do is buy bags of pine bark -which is sold as a substrate for orchids-. It does not matter that you wash it because it is already clean.
      A greeting.

  7.   Fermin said

    Hello Monica!!
Behind my cottage there is a pine forest and they are clearing the pine trees now. The branches are shredded and the workers have told me that I can take what I need for my garden but I don't know if this is good or only the bark has benefits.
In any case, these crushed pine branches can be useful for the garden in some way or not?
    THANK YOU

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Fermín.
The problem with pines is that they acidify the soil a lot. If you have a clay soil and you want to grow plants such as lemon trees for example, it is fine to spread it on the surface.
But if you have plants such as carob trees, almond trees, ... well, Mediterranean plants, I do not advise you.
      A greeting.

Hello..Monica… .I have a product that comes out when sifting what comes out of the crusher when crushing pruning pine branches….

What can I do with that product?… What can it be used for?… Could it be considered as a pine substrate?

    regards

      Hello Hector.
The crushed pine branches can serve as mulch 🙂
      All the best
