What are creepers?

Bougainvillea in bloom

Creepers are plants that use a number of resources to climb, either on a support that can serve them, such as a fence, or by other plants, which can end up having problems growing when deprived of sunlight. For this reason, it is very important that they be pruned regularly, since otherwise they could even dry out the trees.

Why do they climb?

In nature, there are several ways to survive, and all plants have a single goal: to capture as much sunlight as they can. But of course, in a forest full of gigantic trees, you can only do one thing if you want to be able to perform a more efficient photosynthesis: take advantage of the height of the largest plants to reach a clearing, which can be 6 meters high ... or more.

What types are there?

Yellow mandevilla

Depending on how they achieve their goal, three types of creepers are distinguished:

  • With tendrils: tendrils are leaves, stems or petioles designed to wrap around a handle. Some examples are: Clematis sp, Lathyrus sp, or Pisum sativum.
  • With aerial roots: They are those that have roots with which they can even grip the walls. Some examples are: Hedera sp or Campsis sp.
  • With fickle stems: are those that wrap around the supports. Some examples are: Lonicera sp, Podranea sp, Convolvulus sp.

What did you think of the vines? Do you have any at home?
