What to plant in August?

Cacti of the species Echinocactus grusonii

August in the northern hemisphere is one of the summer months, the hottest season. In many parts of Spain it is also the driest, for example in different parts of the Mediterranean region. With these conditions, few are encouraged to plant anything in the orchard or garden. And the fact is, the mere fact of putting a hole in the ground ... well, it's lazy (why are we going to fool ourselves) 🙂.

But the truth is that this is a month in which, although the tasks in the garden are reduced to a minimum by the heat and, in the coastal areas and islands also by the high humidity, it can be very interesting. So If you want to know what to plant in August, then I'll tell you.

This month there are many plants that are growing: flowers, palms, trees ... Unless the temperature is too high for them and / or they lack water or food, their growth rate will not begin to slow down until they pass 4-6 weeks, when fall approaches. For this reason, there are many people who do not want to risk planting in the garden, since if the roots are manipulated too much they may have some trouble rooting.

Still, especially in the garden there are things we have to do. And one of them is to plant some plants (or seedlings, if they are from the garden). Let's see which ones:

Orchard

Chard

They are as follows:

  • Collar
  • Escarola
  • Thistle
  • Broccoli
  • Artichoke
  • Spinach
  • Chard
  • Borage
  • Arugula

Garden

Polygala myrtifolia

Polygala myrtifolia

In general, garden plants that are being grown in pots so far should not be planted in the ground in August. But there are some who are very strong and who will hardly notice the change. They are as follows:

  • Well-rooted plants in pots; that is, those that grow roots through the drainage holes or those that, when removed from said container, the root ball comes out whole, without crumbling, and easily.
  • Cactus, succulent and caudiciform plants, except if they are in flower.
  • Seasonal plants that are not in bloom.

And you, what do you plan to plant in August?
