When and how to fertilize the lawn?

Natural grass

Lawn is a beautiful green carpet that looks great in many gardens. It is not very difficult to maintain and, of course, if we want to have a picnic or simply lie on the ground, sow it is one of our best options.

Now, in order for him to be healthy, we need to know when and how to fertilize the lawn, since that is one of the tasks that will allow us to achieve a magnificent green carpet.

When is it paid?

To have a green and healthy lawn It must be paid three times a year: in spring, in summer (avoid the hottest months) and in autumn. In this way, we will ensure that it has adequate growth and development, producing completely healthy leaves, and not yellow or dry.

Thus, in addition, we will reduce the risk of it being damaged by the heat of the summer season or by low winter temperatures.

What compost to use?

The most suitable lawn fertilizer is one that is slow-release; that is, nitrogen is released as the granites decompose. It is not a good idea to use a quick-release one, since doing so will cause the grass to grow very quickly and we would have to go through the mower much more often than we will when adding slow-release fertilizer.

How is it paid?

The subscriber will always do it after having cut the grass. It can be distributed with special carts that are sold in nurseries, or by hand (broadcast). In any case, try to distribute the dose that is indicated on the product packaging as evenly as possible. Thus, we will avoid that in some points there is too much and in others little.

When finishing fertilizing, we will water trying to keep the soil very moist, so that the fertilizer dissolves and, incidentally, avoid possible burns.

Natural grass

Once the grass has grown, our new concern will probably be that it grows too tall. In those cases, it is best to have a suitable lawnmower to facilitate its correct maintenance.

I hope it has been useful to you 🙂.

Hi Monica, thank you very much for your help. I have come to this blog looking for how to fertilize the trees.

One question, I am starting to make compost with the remains of grass and leaves from the fruit trees that I have in the garden. I was wondering if said compost can be used to fertilize the lawn in the periods you mention (spring, summer, autumn) or on the contrary, it is not indicated.

    Thanks for your help!

      Hello Rodrigo.

You can use it all year round. It is true that natural fertilizer, such as compost, is usually slow-effective, because the roots take a little longer to absorb the nutrients. But when it comes to grass, I definitely recommend it. Just think about taking a pass later with a rake so that the leaves are not hidden from the sun.

      Regards!

I fertilized with nitrogen, a few white pellets and the grass is drying out.

      Hello Ninet.
How much did you put? Did you water the lawn after fertilizing it? It is important to pour the amount indicated on the container, and also water it later.

Now, I recommend you water it a lot, to try to clean it and prevent it from drying out.

      A greeting.
