The plant known as Yucca filamentosa It is one of those that look good in any sunny corner. It does not have a trunk, but its width can exceed one meter, and as its leaves are precious, it is difficult to go unnoticed.

In addition, it resists drought very well, being able to stop watering from the second year that it is planted in the ground, so it is undoubtedly a perfect species for those areas where the lack of rain is a problem. Find out how to take care of it.

Origin and characteristics

View of the Yucca filamentosa

Our protagonist is an acaule plant (without trunk) native to the United States, specifically from Florida to New Hampshire. Its scientific name is stringy yucca, although it is usually sold only with a »c» (Yuca, instead of Yucca). Its leaves grow forming a very dense basal rosette, and are linear, 50 x 2,5 cm, rigid, with an intense bluish-green color.

The flowers are grouped in erect panicles, are hermaphroditic and whitish or pink in color. The fruit is a dehiscent capsule that contains black seeds.

If you want to have a copy, we recommend you take care of it as follows:

  • Location: it must be outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: you can mix black peat with perlite in equal parts.
    • Garden: grows in soils with good drainageSo if yours is not like that, make a planting hole of about 50cm x 50cm and fill it with the substrate mentioned above (peat with 50% perlite). In this way, you will have better growth.
  • Irrigation: once or twice a week. If you have it on the ground and a minimum of 350mm per year is registered, from the second year it is on the ground you can stop watering.
  • Subscriber: in spring and summer, with Organic fertilizers.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists frosts down to -12ºC.
