Our protagonist is an annual herbaceous plant native to tropical America whose scientific name is Celosia argentea var. feathery. It is popularly known as plumage latticework, argentea lacewing or feathery amaranth. It reaches a height of between 20 to 80cm, depending on the variety.

Location

It is a plant that it has to be outside, in full sun, so that it can produce its flowers with health. Since it is small, it looks great in pots placed on tables, balconies, etc.; although many together are also usually planted in some corner of the garden, thus creating a spectacular effect.

the lattice it's not indoorAlthough if you have a room that gets lots and lots of natural light, then yes you could have it.

Irrigation

Must be frecuente, mostly in summer. You have to water every 2 days during the summer season and a little less the rest of the year. Of course, avoid waterlogging as much as possible: if you grow it in a pot with a plate underneath, always remember that you water to remove any excess water after 30 minutes, since otherwise its roots will rot and die.

Likewise, it is important not to wet the aerial part, that is, leaves or flowers, as they could burn with the sun or become attractive to fungi, who would kill them in a matter of a short time.

Earth

The lattice has curious flowers

It depends on where you want to grow it:

  • flower pot: use universal culture substrate, if possible mixed with 30% perlite or similar so that the drainage is good.
  • garden: in case you want to have it in the ground you should know that it grows well in all types of land as long as they have good drainage.

During flowering it is advisable to fertilize with a liquid organic fertilizerand guano (on sale here). Another option is to pay it with specific fertilizers for flower plants (for sale here).

In any case, the indications specified on the product packaging must be followed to minimize the risk of overdose.

Planting time

The ideal time to plant it in the garden or to transfer your lattice plant to a larger pot is in spring, when the minimum temperature is at least 18 degrees Celsius.

Multiplication

The flower of thecelosia is small

It multiplies by seeds in spring (You can also towards mid / end of winter if you have a greenhouse or an electric germinator). To do this, you have to follow this step by step:

  1. First, the seedbed is filled (flowerpot, seedling trays, yogurt or milk containers in which you have made a little hole in the base, ...) with universal substrate (for sale here).
  2. Afterwards, it is watered conscientiously, soaking the whole earth well.
  3. Then, the seeds are placed on the surface, ensuring that they are as far apart as possible.
  4. They are then covered with a thin layer of substrate.
  5. Finally, it is watered again, this time with a sprayer to simply moisten that most superficial layer that you have added of soil, and the seedbed is placed outside, in full sun.

Keeping the substrate moist (you can do it by putting a plate or tray under the seedbed, and fill it with water every time you see that the soil begins to dry out). This will germinate in about 10-15 days.

Plagues and diseases

It is quite resistant, but usually has problems with Mites and powdery mildew. The first is treated with an acaricide (for sale here), and the second with fungicide (for sale No products found.) and controlling the risks.

In addition, it is also important that during the rainy season you keep an eye on the snails, as they tend to eat the leaves.

Rusticity

Can't stand cold or frost. In fact, being annual, the normal thing is that after flowering its leaves begin to wither. To extend its life a bit, what you can do is cut the flowers just when you see that they start to get ugly.

The plant begins to die when the temperature is 10 degrees Celsius.

What uses does it have?

The feathery lattice can be potted decorating the patio, balcony or terrace, or in the garden as a solid plant for example. As we have seen, it is quite easy to care for, so it is suitable for beginners or for those who want some color without having to get too complicated.

What did you think of the feathery lattice? Did you know her?

Hello, I have a question, if the Feathery Lattice is annual, does it mean that it will only live one year and die and I throw it away? I can't take care of it like all plants so that every year it blooms again?
I await your response, nice day and blessings.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Maria Alejandra.
Yes, annuals only live one season (a few months, they don't usually make it a year).
But before dying, they bloom and produce seeds. These can be saved and sown in spring, or let them fall in the pot so that nature takes its course 🙂
          Greetings.

Hello when I bought the plant it had its bright colors I have already a month and its colors are clear I have it outside, like a covered porch, it will be because it does not get sun, please help how I do so that it returns to have its colors

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Lilu.
For it to grow well it is important that it be in direct sunlight, throughout the day.
In semi-shade or shade it loses color.
      Greetings.

Hello…. query, each seed gives rise to 1 plant? ...

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Yasna.
In principle yes. If the seed is viable, it will germinate.
      Regards!

Hello. I would like to know if there is any method for the flowers to grow in various colors. I sowed several seeds and they just came out. Yellow and red. When I bought it they had 4 colors and now only 2. What could you advise me?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Giocar.

It is best to get flower plants in the colors you want. A lattice of flowers, for example yellow, will most likely produce seeds that will give rise to flowers of that color, unless it is a hybrid in which case there would be a 50% chance that it would produce flowers of a different color.

      Regards!

Hello, I have a pot with 4 featherbeds each of a different color. I think one of them has passed all its stages and is dying, the other 3 are very beautiful and with bright colors. I don't understand why that one died so fast. How do I know what the seeds are? I check each one but I don't see. The only thing I see is that in the yellow feathery it has some little buds that look dead and inside they have little black balls, is that it? I hope you respond to me

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Daniela.

Yes, indeed, those little black balls are the seeds.
You can sow them in pots with cultivation soil, in spring. Don't bury them too much.
Put them in the sun and keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged.

      Greetings.

Thank you very much for the explication. I already had an answer to my question through another answer. I will try next year in the spring to start with the seeds, but in the meantime, how are they preserved?

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello again.
You can store them in plastic bags with hermetic closure 🙂
Put them in a drawer, and in spring you can plant them.
          A greeting.

I did not know this plant, and I like

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alicia.

It is very pretty, and easy to get. In spring they usually sell it in nurseries and markets.

      Greetings.

I have not understood well. If you already have the same plant, does it bloom again the following year or do you have to germinate the seeds and start over?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Inma.
It is a plant that dies after flowering, so if you want to have one again, you have to sow its seeds.
      A greeting.
