Our protagonist is an annual herbaceous plant native to tropical America whose scientific name is Celosia argentea var. feathery. It is popularly known as plumage latticework, argentea lacewing or feathery amaranth. It reaches a height of between 20 to 80cm, depending on the variety.
Its leaves are simple, lanceolate, with well marked veins, and are 3-5cm long. The flowers, which sprout in summer-autumn, are grouped in erect, dense and feathery inflorescences of red, pink, orange or yellow color.

Location
It is a plant that it has to be outside, in full sun, so that it can produce its flowers with health. Since it is small, it looks great in pots placed on tables, balconies, etc.; although many together are also usually planted in some corner of the garden, thus creating a spectacular effect.

Irrigation
Must be frecuente, mostly in summer. You have to water every 2 days during the summer season and a little less the rest of the year. Of course, avoid waterlogging as much as possible: if you grow it in a pot with a plate underneath, always remember that you water to remove any excess water after 30 minutes, since otherwise its roots will rot and die.
Likewise, it is important not to wet the aerial part, that is, leaves or flowers, as they could burn with the sun or become attractive to fungi, who would kill them in a matter of a short time.
Earth
It depends on where you want to grow it:
- flower pot: use universal culture substrate, if possible mixed with 30% perlite or similar so that the drainage is good.
- garden: in case you want to have it in the ground you should know that it grows well in all types of land as long as they have good drainage.
Subscriber
During flowering it is advisable to fertilize with a liquid organic fertilizerand guano (on sale here). Another option is to pay it with specific fertilizers for flower plants (for sale here).
In any case, the indications specified on the product packaging must be followed to minimize the risk of overdose.
Planting time
The ideal time to plant it in the garden or to transfer your lattice plant to a larger pot is in spring, when the minimum temperature is at least 18 degrees Celsius.

It multiplies by seeds in spring (You can also towards mid / end of winter if you have a greenhouse or an electric germinator). To do this, you have to follow this step by step:
- First, the seedbed is filled (flowerpot, seedling trays, yogurt or milk containers in which you have made a little hole in the base, ...) with universal substrate (for sale here).
- Afterwards, it is watered conscientiously, soaking the whole earth well.
- Then, the seeds are placed on the surface, ensuring that they are as far apart as possible.
- They are then covered with a thin layer of substrate.
- Finally, it is watered again, this time with a sprayer to simply moisten that most superficial layer that you have added of soil, and the seedbed is placed outside, in full sun.
Keeping the substrate moist (you can do it by putting a plate or tray under the seedbed, and fill it with water every time you see that the soil begins to dry out). This will germinate in about 10-15 days.
Plagues and diseases
It is quite resistant, but usually has problems with Mites and powdery mildew. The first is treated with an acaricide (for sale here), and the second with fungicide (for sale No products found.) and controlling the risks.
In addition, it is also important that during the rainy season you keep an eye on the snails, as they tend to eat the leaves.
Rusticity
Can't stand cold or frost. In fact, being annual, the normal thing is that after flowering its leaves begin to wither. To extend its life a bit, what you can do is cut the flowers just when you see that they start to get ugly.
The plant begins to die when the temperature is 10 degrees Celsius.

Yes, annuals only live one season (a few months, they don't usually make it a year).
But before dying, they bloom and produce seeds. These can be saved and sown in spring, or let them fall in the pot so that nature takes its course 🙂
