Succulents have fleshy leaves

Succulents are very popular in gardens, but especially on terraces and patios. Many of them are small, so you can create great compositions, or choose to have them in individual pots. In addition, its flowers, although they are not usually very large, have ornamental value.

Due to their characteristics, they can resist short periods of drought; so they don't need to be watered often. So if we take all this into account, the only thing left is to know what types of succulent plants there are, so then we are going to show you some of the most beautiful and / or curious.

What is a crass plant?

First of all, it is important to know what a succulent plant and what is not. They are often mistaken for cacti, but they have nothing to do with them. Thus, you should know that our protagonists are part of the Crassulaceae family (the cacti of the Cactaceae). This is made up of about 35 genera, comprising 1400 species. Most are herbaceous, although there are some that grow as small shrubs and a few as trees.

They are native to the northern hemisphere and Africa, almost always in arid or semi-arid regions. Because of that, they store water in their leaves, which are fleshy, and which take various forms. As for its flowers, they sprout in generally cymose inflorescences. Its fruits are capsules or follicles, often dry.

Unlike cacti, they don't have areolas. The areolas are axillary buds from which spines and also flowers sprout. They are found in the "ribs" of cacti. So if you have doubts about whether a plant is crass or cactus, you can look to see if it has or not.
