Selection of the best summer plants

After spending a colorful spring, it's time to welcome the warmest season of the year. In these next three months, the garden or terrace will have much more life if possible, and not only because we are going to enjoy its quiet corners, but also because plants are in full growing season. Now more than ever it is urgent for them to bear fruit and add a few more centimeters to their height as they gain strength, which will help them overcome the winter much better, which, although it will still be late, it is only a matter of time before it does .

For this reason, there are many summer plants with which you can show off your space, regardless of whether it is a garden, a patio, or a terrace. Here is a list of the most interesting ones. Don't miss it 🙂.

Trees

Let's start with the trees. There are many that become a show in themselves during this time of year, and one example of this is the japanese maples, especially those with leaves of a color other than green, such as Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' or Acer palmatum 'Ornatum'. Although they're not the only ones.

Did you know that there are several species that bloom in summer? Some of them are:

• Delonix direction (flamboyant)
• bauhinia variegata (Cow leg)
• Albizia julibrissin (Silk tree)

Shrubbery

Shrubs are essential in gardens, both as for hedges of any kind and as isolated specimens. In addition, they can be pruned to keep them, if necessary, in pots, decorating for example the terrace. Its ornamental value it's very, very high, and there are many who embellish the room either with their leaves and / or with their flowers, among them:

Aquatic

There is nothing like approaching the pond to notice a slight but pleasant drop in temperatures. In summer, the aquatic plants become very beautiful, some even bloom. Among the many that you can find in nurseries, we recommend the following:

• Cyperus papyrus (Egyptian papyrus)
• Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus)

Caudiciform

Caudiciform plants are those that they store the water in the logs, which thicken. They live in extreme conditions, with temperatures that can easily exceed 35ºC, and where it rains very little. Little by little, we are finding more species in the nurseries where cacti and succulents are sold, but they are not yet well known. Some of them are:

• Adenium obesum (Desert rose)
• Pachypodium lamerei
• Adansonia digitata (Baobab)
• Cyphostemma juttae
• fockea edulis

Grass

When we think of summer plants, grass does not usually come to mind, but the truth is that, if you have space to place it, it is very worth it, I will tell you why: it is very likely that you use it a lot at this time. You plant grass in summer without problem, as the grass grows very quickly. You only have to wait a maximum of two months to have a beautiful green carpet where you can sit with the family for a picnic or simply to enjoy the landscape.

Cactus

Summer, heat, low rainfall (in some parts of the country) ... This reminds me that cacti are one of the main summer plants that you can have in a pot or in the garden. There are many genera, and many more species, and there are a few that also bloom during this season. Some of them are those of the genus Mammillaria, Echinopsis or Gymnocalycium.

Do not forget put them in an area where light hits them directly so that they can grow and flourish in health.

Grasses

Why not beautify your garden or terrace with some grasses? There are some that are really beautiful, and do not need any special attention, since in addition they are very resistant to pests and diseases. The only drawback would be the pollen from its flowers, which can make you sneeze if you have an allergy to these types of plants, but you can always choose to cut its flower stems. Some of them are:

• Carex sp (all species)
• Eastern Pennisetum
• Fescue glauca
• Lagurus sp (all species)

Succulents

Succulents could not be absent either. Although they need a bit more water than cacti, they also originate from places where rainfall is very low. Among the most interesting genres for the summer, we highlight the living stones or lithops (like the one you can see in the image above); the echeveria, which are beautiful plants whose leaves grow in such a way that they seem to want to form a flower at ground level (although of course, they also bloom ... and they do so precisely in hot months); and the Fenestrary, which is a succulent with leaves in the form of a very curious green "closed tube".

Palms

It is true that with the issue of the red weevil and the paysandisia archon, palm trees seem to be losing popularity. And it is that treating adult specimens can be quite expensive, but the truth is that ..., in my opinion, you cannot spend a summer without contemplating a palm tree, as long as it is clear. Many of us have sometimes dreamed of going to the Caribbean, to walk along its beaches, to enjoy its coconut trees imported (yes, indeed, the Cocos nucifera It does not come from the Caribbean, but rather from India).

But we cannot have coconut trees in temperate regions, because it is very sensitive to cold. Yes we can have, however, these other palm trees:

• Phoenix dactylifera
• Phoenix canariensis
• Robust Washingtonia
• Chamaerops humilis
• brahea armata
• butia capitata
• Jubaea chilensis
